But I got it solved out the easy way :)
wimp! (just kidding...)
If you ever browse through the SRPMS on a suse distro
you'll find it's a very heavilly patched system -- and
some of the system libs may not do exactly what is
expected - though in most cases it's OK. (their kernel
also suffers from this malady - and always the first
thing to get replaced AFAMBG (<- as far as my box goes...)
(see also DMWMFKM (don't mess with my * kernel man!)
mplayer happens to have one of the most advanced ./configure scripts around, handling -O3 optimizations on bleeding edge processors - while managing to deal with multiple versions of gcc. It's also a very intricate application to begin with.
So: patchy_suse + optimized_mplayer = "UTFRPMSD" (use the * RPMS dude)
I just opted to compile mplayer on another linux box and copied the binaries over to the SUSE machine.
But that's because I swore on the penquin 10 years ago that I'd never install sfw on my box that I didn't compile myself. DMWMFMM (don't mess with my * machine man!
