Sun Microsystems has recently released their Common Development and
Distribution License. Well it isnt quite certified as an open source license
by the OSI as yet, but it does seem to be a decent initiative by Sun. While
it is not compatible with the GPL at all, it may just be acceptable to some
corporates. A few highlights of the license(as per my personal analysis goes)
are:-
1) Separate (re)distribution terms for Source Code forms and Executable forms
of the software.
2) Restriction of distribution of Source Code forms under the CDDL only.
3) Ability to distribute Executable forms under a license of the distributor's
choice, as long as it doesnt limit the recepient's rights in the Source Code
form.
4)Ability to create a Larger Work by combining non-free software with the
covered software and distribute the end result as a single product. However
the license for the covered software would remain the same.
5) Limited patent protection for developers and modifiers by way of
termination of licensing rights to anyone who launches a patent infringment
claim against the initial developer or a contributor to the source.
