The best way will be to use a live linux CD,
This type of linux does not require any installation at all. You just
pop the CD in and boot off the cdrom drive. Your windows partitions
will not be touched at all.

You will find a reputed KNOPPIX linux at
http://knopper.net /knoppix
download the cdrom iso from
http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
and burn it on the cd. Thats all you will need.

You can also try ubuntu linux
http://ubuntulinux.org
Again download the iso for live ubuntu cd from
http://ubuntu.hands.com/releases/4.10/warty-release-live-i386.iso

I guess as you are new i should explain that the knoppix is KDE based
and ubuntu is Gnome based. This means the two look and feel
differently

You can also install knoppix on your harddisk once you decide you like it.
Ubuntu has a separate installation cds you will need to downlaod if
you want to install it.

Good luck and welcome to linux commun.
