Better yet, Kdevelop is excellent and will even debug the code for you,
Mandrake should include kdevelop,

In that you can create a new project thru project menu and chose
console hello world application in the wizard, it will create a
complete project and you will be able to run it like in *argh*  visual
c *argh*.
Btw it uses kate embedded so it will be just like using kate.

Also try downloading latest kdevelop it has lot more features.

Although this is the way for the 'windows migrant' & 'we want gui only' crowed,

other wise emacs is the best thing ever and will give you both
compiler/make and debugger interface. but its not for the light harted
so i wouldn't recommend it unless you have someone to teach you how to
use it efficiently.
ofcourse you will have to mentain your own makefiles in this case....
