On my machine (Red Hat Linux -8.0), There is no write permission to (dos
partition) harddrive for user login.
Firstly, if your partition is an NTFS partition (which is actually NOT a
DOS partition though), then I think RH8 does not provide write access
NTFS partitions. You can check out their experimental attempt to write
to NTFS partitions by recompiling the kernel with the appropriate
options checked while u configure using menuconfig or xconfig.
On the other hand, if its a FAT/FAT32 partition, adding the "users" and
"rw" options to the mount command will do the trick. I normally add the
same to the /etc/fstab file and the kernel auto mounts the partition at
boot time. You could check out the manpages for "mount" and "fstab" for
customizing the mounting process. Even uid and gid flags may help.
While I am trying to enabling wrtie permission to group and users from root
login, there is an error message 'operation not permitted'. Could anyone
suggest how can this sutiation be tackled.
I actually did not get what u had in mind when u said this?
Are u trying to use something like "chmod" on the directory u mounted
the partition to? - That's not the way u can do it!!!
best of luck,
