Several arguements were made, and even though I think this thread has gone on long enough, I would sure like try and answer these.
* "... this is the *nix way of doing thigs. The whole idea is to provide a lot of options and small useful utilities, on top of which others can build more. Use this way and prosper" So you're saying that lets not mimick the windows way which microsoft is trying to force on to the users. Lets instead force our own way on the users. aka: "Learn this or perish!". The users lose both ways. Why do you think the people at gnome (and everywhere, generally speaking) are trying so hard to try and understand effective UI design? why do you think mac fanboys are screaming out loud that they have the best desktop os in the world? I'm not saying that we should mimick the windows way. I'm saying that we should be (and we have the capacity to be) much better. I'm not saying that windows is usable. Far from it. Getting help on windows about something is hell. But this just goes on to show the kind of people who are using the operating system and why they use it. (other than factors like fud and lock-in) I'm not saying that we should restrict options available to the user or enforce a standard. I'm talking about the users who dont want the options and who dont want to put together small tools to make their own. * "... you're not going to get anything for free. (aka: real men write their own device drivers)" The flaw here is the idea of wanting things for free (and saying that they should be free). Unfortunately, money moves this world, and will continue to move it for sometime. For that time, nothing is going to be free. I'm not going to start with the whole free as in speech thing here. But if someone offers me a good desktop operating system with a linux kernel and all the source and I had to pay for it, I would. "... there's a whole bunch of people who dont want to learn, and when they use windows, they're the people who will have 3000 viruses on their computers" This means that windows will still be the dominant operating system, and there will still be millions of zombies free to unleash evil upon this world. I'm not ok with that. I dont think anyone is. and finally, as totally OT: * "macOS is as usable as windows in klingon..." are you kidding me? :D. Sure there's a learning curve, but beyond that, its the easiest thing to use. And besides, a UNIX core with the awesome gui? what more could one ask for?
