In my experience this error occurs only on a corrupt grub.
Boot from 1st cd
press F1 for more options
I think on mdk you type rescue ENTER
give it the proper partition
command prompt like#
grub-install /dev/hda   //if you want it on mbr
grub-install /dev/fd0   //if you want it on floppy
ctr+del+alt ............ie reboot if no errors reported
with previous command.
Tell us what happens.
