Hi,
There is no "perfect" distro. There are pros and cons. Rest of my replies
inline.... And reg windows, its a real pain to install windows.... Boot 3-4
times only to get a basic system. then install codes, office, other programs
etc etc... wonders how much time an install will take...

look for flex and bison... as far as I see, mandrake is good balanced home
distro. Am personally using it for more than a year now.

Going through the list, I feel that Simply MEPIS best suites you.

MEPIS is Debian based, and the entire deb repo of packages is available to
you.

It is responsive enough. A friend of mine uses it on P3 500 Mhz with 256mb
ram.

I guess Deb has lots of them. By default, MEPIS contains only basic
development tools.

MEPIS is polished. Better than Knoppix in some respects.

Excellent av support. I have played all kinds of files using mplayer in MEPIS.
And lots of codecs come by default.

I suggest that you keep some free space (1-2 gb will do) for trying out
distros. Or google and read ppl's reviews. maybe distrowatch.com can help. Yo

MEPIS is a single CD distro. Its a live + installable cd combo.
