Did you do an online update? If yes, just log in text mode as root. Give the command 'yast' (without quotes). In that, go to system->sysconfig editor. In its tree view, go to: Desktop->Display manager->DISPLAYMANAGER. If its value is 'xdm', change it to 'kdm'. This should work. Otherwise run 'sax2' at console. In there select appropriate monitor and graphics cards, and even mouse/keyboard. Save settings and retry starting X server with 'startx'. You might also want to try setting display parameters using yast. As root with text login, start yast. Go to Hardware->Graphics Card and Monitor. Select "Reprobe" option for auto detection. Try using defaults that it detected. Hope this helps!
