Hi all,
Today there was quite an interesting plug meet. Although there
was no official agenda there were somethings discussed & a demo shown.
The details are as under :-
1. Aditya shared with all his experiences in FOSS.IN. He shared what his
perception as to how the event was organized, the level of talks & in
general somethings which could perhaps make GNUnify better. He also gave
a DVD which was given to PLUG which had few FOSS tools, a Linux & BSD
distro & some indic tools by Indian Govt. Then there was a very small
less than 5-minute presentation given by me on my observations with
installing, working with Ubuntu 5.10 One of the things that came out was
that although there isn't any issues either with space or bandwidth if
somebody could make a local repository & also if some of the Debian or
Ubuntu users can come together & either make a howto something like
ubuntuguide.org which is the unofficial Add-On CD for 5.04 something
similar if can be attempted for 5.10. The Unofficial Add-On CD, could
that be made re-distributional or not?
Some other interesting things which were spoken were about
making either an avi or some kind of animation of mouse-clicking on
things, something which is known as screencasting ,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screencast there was specific mention of a
software called as vnc2swf http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf/ as
seen in the pages it needs a vnc server so how much RAM the whole thing
would take?, the other thing is that it doesn't support ogg as swf
doesn't so is the answer either png or SVG so can something be done
about it?
The other interesting thing was Devendra's showcased a
CD which comprised of e-books, audio e-books & some video. He also had
made another CD which had just fairy tales. Some of the e-books were
plain text while others had some illustrations. One of the things which
he was concerned is the redistributionality of the CD. In the sense,
although most of the works tht he has downloaded are public-domain but
then the laws have been made so complex in the sense of lots of things
coming under International laws which have clauses & sub-clauses which
if he wanted to distribute commercially or even otherwise the legality
issues involved.
There were quite a few people who felt the need to
have a licensing workshop/meet where this could be discussed & shared
among us. Things like if the e-book copyright has expired what about
audio e-books, what is the standing there?
Hope to see some fruitful discussions on all the above.
