I am not sure what is configuration of your laptop. You can find a report of which Acer laptops are working better in
Ubuntu at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptopsAcer?highlight=%28laptop%29.
From this page you can find which model is closest to one you specified and
apply tweaks if necessary.
I would suggest you to install Ubuntu 5.10 as it has better support for laptops. Although this may not be solution to
your problem at all.
And after you can see GUI, you can participate in laptop testing
