The TataIndicom(VSNL) connection is pretty good. I have the 64kbps
plan, which costs Rs. 551 all inclusive per month, with unlimited traffic.
The USB modem is a problem. I have the Billion 7000 modem, which uses the
Connexant chipset. Fortunately, the newer 2.6.x kernels support that modem. All
that is required is the firmware. I had posted a mail some months ago with the
URL's of where to find the required stuff. However, I've heard that VSNL has
now stopped giving USB modems, and only gives routers, which are a snap to
configure with rp-pppoe. Also, the routers cost just Rs. 1000 more
than the modems, so I think that its an investment worth making.
