Umm, Optical mouse do behave erratic, when the surface
below isn't even or isn't the way it should be. The
surface should be even, plain. Using a good mousepad
should help.
Shiny surfaces or even a glass table top can result into erratic
behaviour. If that is the case, you can try placing a plain sheet of
paper under the mouse and see if it solves the problem.
