I use gaim as yahoo, msn & irc client. Many times gaim wont connect to irc server returning an "read error". In the same time period , under windows, mirc does connect without any trouble. I would suggest go for a client program like xchat ! I am not truly aware of this issue yet i tooo face the same problem many times but xchat is completely updated, give it a try !
