Now that you have reminded, I have seen this too but in a different way. A 
postgresql installation had database mounted over NFS but sometime NFS is too 
slow to come up or hang altogether but the local server created a database on 
the local disk when there was no mount. So figuring out where the data is was 
some debugging fun. :)

Being blind is no good I guess.
