you have three choices:
qt
gtk+
wxWidgets
all three are very well documented with lots of tutorials and howtos.
They also have active mailing lists and IRC channels. You should have
no problem picking them up. Also now many people prefer using
scripting languages for the faster turnaround time. So if you are
using python you have:
pyqt
pygtk
wxPython
