IMHO: Whoever (Linux Distro) makes it easy for ISVs and developers in general, to write, (test, install, update etc.) interesting applications and make it easy for users to use computer accessories/peripherals (printer, cable modem, camera, mobile phone, web cam, projector etc.), will be able to penetrate market. Ordinary users want to use an s/w application and get his work done efficiently, they do not want to fall in love with any distro :-) Not to mention support/buy in from computer manufacturers (See www.dell.com/ubuntu ) Therefore I found following part (about how to make it easy to write applications for all platforms) of the interview more interesting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LXF: The nice thing about Ubuntu is that it's done what the Linux Standards Base should have done and implemented a specification where you can rely on certain things in the filesystem always being in the same place, which must be pretty nice for a developer to work with. JA: For development standards, the Linux Standards Base still isn't useful enough because we're always on the bleeding edge. We need stuff that's above and beyond what the LSB can standardise. We still have the problems of having to test and configure for all sorts of platforms including Solaris and others as well as Linux, so we can't just do things for the Linux Standards Base. It would be marvellous if we could, because it would make our lives a lot easier. > -- > ______________________________________________________________________ > Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: ([email protected]) > List Information: http://plug.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/plug-mail > Send 'help' to [email protected] for mailing instructions. > -- Vijay Patil -- ______________________________________________________________________ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: ([email protected]) List Information: http://plug.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [email protected] for mailing instructions.
