The most common cause is that your connection script hasn't successfully
dialled out to the remote system and invoked ppp service there.  Instead,
pppd is talking to something (a shell or login process on the remote
machine, or maybe just the modem) which is only outputting 7-bit characters.

By the default, pppd *always* sets the local serial port to 8 bits per
character, with no parity and 1 stop bit.

I would suggest you configure your modem.

Try doing this if your modem supports AT commands.

at&fs0=0&c1&d1&k2&n0&b1&m4e0q1y0&w0

This set of AT command sets the modem to factory default, no autoanswer,
compression, fixed speed rate, echo off, quiet result codes, template 0,
then save to template 0. Then turn off your modem and on again.
