There is a good sample at www.apacheweek.com. Click on the Using User
Authentication.
edit conf/httpd.conf
Add the directory you're trying to secure
Ex.
<Directory "/usr/local/apache/htdocs/secure">
...
AllowOverride AuthConfig
...
</Directory>
