It allows you to use partially-bad RAM chips under Linux. I think this is
very useful as I know lots of people with broken 72-pin EDO SIMMs. You
could revive an old 486 with Linux and this patch. Memory isn't getting
cheaper fast enough and in any case you can't buy 72-pin EDO anymore.
