If in case you would like to experiment on dynamic-dns on lan via linux, here is the link. http://www.sector13.org/kazin/projects/dhcp_dns.html tools/utilities i used for my experiment. 1. dhcp 2.0.3 - dhcp server http://rufus.w3.org 2. bind 8.2.2 p3 - nameserver http://rufus.w3.org 3. Net::DNS v 0.12 - module for perl http://www.cpan.org 4. dns_update.pl - you can download it at the given link above. I have compared the dynamic-dns implementation of microsoft (Use DHCP for WINS Resolution) with ISC's DHCP and BIND. With microsoft implementation, it's more often than not that you will not be able to ping the other workstation using computer (netbios) name. The good thing about unix implementation of dynamic-dns is that, the computer names of win95/98 workstations configured as dhcp client are submitted to the nameserver for update. And that computer name is prepended to the domain name you specified in dhcpd.conf. The update is being done by the script dns_update.pl. It's easy. The tip here is the "allow-update" feature to be added to the named.conf which I think is only applicable to Bind 8.1.1 and later. <? ?> Ronneil /onie/ R.
