about Linux. We will start from explaining what Linux and open source is
all about, to introducing UNIX commands, directory/system structure, etc
(yes, that basic!). I feel that there is a need to touch this sector of the
computer community since there is no way that the common 'Juan' will just
start using Linux. A huge percent of the audience will be college students.

Either they'll ask about the 'what' and 'how' of compilation under linux or
since most of them will be playing games during their spare time, how to
play their win32 games. They'll be more interested in that I'm sure. Show
them starcraft blasting happily under wine. Then tell them it's possible to
compile/debug/run dos/win32 programs under dosemu. It's sooo stable I'm
running a serial comm program under dosemu and a pentium=60 that gets
rattled under win98se and a pentiumIII. Heck, with Inprise/Borland's Turbo
C/Pascal free for download and DR-DOS free for non-commercial use, what
else do they need for their programming lessons?
>- I'm not competing with PLUG (and its talks during meetings) or the Linux
2k since they cater to a different field in computing. I mean, let's face
it, the average student will not be able to use NAT or beowulf, nor would
they be interested in setting up a DNS server at home.
But they will be interested in a `plug and pray` environment that doesn't
install over their precious thesis and saved games. Tell them about rpm and
the fact that you only need ONE cd to install and run everything.

not as a feared UNIX OS but a powerful and practical workstation. We would
also be covering X/KDE/GNOME (we would list down the utilities they can use
to make Linux a desktop system), simple networking (home/ipmasq), and basic
Internet services for small businesses.

This should be emphasized by ASKING the audience for a list of their most
used applications under winblow$, then you display a list of corresponding
applications under Gnome/KDE and ask them to CROSS-OUT the ones they match
on their list. Those with all applications still unchecked should leave!
Linux isn't for them. Just kidding! :)

those who run WinNT/98-Wingate setup), staff of local computer retailers
(malay mo, they might bundle Linux on their systems or make server
packages, who knows?), and everyone else who plan or are curious about all
the fuzz about Linux, the 'free' OS.
>* Computers: people are encouraged to bring their systems to the event so
they can install Linux on them. While lectures are going on, a seperate
team will guide those who brought their PCs on the other side of the venue.
>* Distributions: I'm expecting 7 or so new distributions that will come
anytime within a week or two from the U.S. c/o Jeff Guttierez. We will be
accepting orders from people before the event so we can burn them
beforehand but we will also bring 2 CDRW machines for those who want copies
burned there. P50 per disk.

Did Jeff send a copy of the second incantation of Mandrake?
