This is a troll!! if you say high-end there's no limit to what the geeky
mind can come up with! instead, I'll spec a reasonable configuration that
still qualifies as a Linux dream machine (i know i'd like to have one
of these..)
of course I'm assuming this is gonna be a workstation. if you want a
server to run your business on.. ignore my post.
main board: MSI 6120N dual-processor (7000)
with 2x MSI 6905 Master slocket (1600)
processor: 2x 366MHz Celeron PPGA (we'll overclock 'em to 550MHz)
(6000)
memory: 256MB SDRAM (8000) - I think 512MB is excessive for a workstation
(but my workstation at mozcom has 512MB.. fat good it gives me.. in my
personal experience 128MB is a bit less than a real power user - like
me - can live with, but i havent stressed out my 256MB)
video card: Voodoo3 3000 AGP - dunno price, prolly around 6000 (not a
GeForce 'cause you dont get 3d-accelerated X with NVIDIA cards at
present) XFree86 4.0 supports even the humble Intel i740 though..
disk controller: Leadtek UDMA66 controller (1500)
disk: Seagate Barracuda 20GB or 28GB (10000 for the 28GB) - you dont need
SCSI for a workstation.. UDMA66 and 7200rpm will get you SCSI-class
performance at a much lower price
monitor: MAG XJ770T 17" trinitron (12000)
sound card: Aureal vortex2 SQ2500 (3000) or SBlive! value (2500) - i'd go
with the Vortex2, i have one and it rocks
that totals around 52K. when you include the case, modem, etc you should
hit 60K. that high end enough for you? you run dual celerons at 550MHz
(400MHz celeron at 600MHz is problematic, i've only got it running at
570MHz).
plus, the MSI slockets/risers can also take FC-PGA PIII chips but not in a
dual processor mode. you'd need to swap 'em for Aopen SMP P-III slockets
for that (not available locally).
if you're really, really rich and 60K is chicken-feed for you.. oh well i
wont pollute the list with what i consider the absolute Linux dream
machine. but a hint: it costs well over 500K (and thats with off-the-shelf
parts, not a branded machine).
