SBLive! I heard is auto detect under Mandrake 7.0
ESS Solo1 integrated in some boards work by loading a
module under Mandrake 6.1
RedHat distros and Mandrake are best at detecting
sound cards since they use soundtool.
Crystal sound cards work.
Eagle I've seen in the kernel but I haven't tried.
Media Forte I know does NOT work.
Yamaha has some models that are in the kernel.
Diamond Sonic S70 works with Kernel 2.2.14 but u
should recompile.
I haven't tried RH6.2 but it should detect more sound
cards automatically.

What you can do is check your distro currently
installed. You can check it via the Kernel
Configuration under /usr/src/linux then time xconfig
or menuconfig. Under the Sound Cards Config, check ur
favorite sound card.

Rule of thumb, don't buy the expensive kind. Linux
doesn't support all those high end features anyway.
Sure you can play music CDs, get a few midis and wavs
out but that's about it. There aren't a lot of games
so if u buy the expensive card, it's so you can enjoy
the high end features under windoze.
