the only CDMA provider I know of is Piltel. I used to have a (big and
bulky) first-generation Qualcomm QCP800 CDMA phone. CDMA technology is
really impressive.. but Piltel is not impressive. And Qualcomm doesn't
make good quality phones.
If I were you, I'd wait till next year. I have no idea if this info is
common knowledge or not, but Globe is rolling out GPRS by November (that's
why they skipped dual-band, they are going straight to GSM2).
For the uninitiated, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the
second-generation GSM protocol. It's CDMA-based (unlike the
TDMA/Aloha-based GSM) and the data rate is 144kbps (!) which is fast
enough to do video. GPRS overlays on GSM1 in the same way that CDMA
overlays on TACS or AMPS.
Remember that Nokia concept phone at CeBIT 1999 which could do two-way
video conferencing? GPRS will make that a reality, and I didn't know it
would be this soon!! also, GPRS phones are ALWAYS CONNECTED so it's really
like you have a leased line in your pocket. Globe will be charging per
packet for this service. I don't know what the charging scheme will be
yet.
Personally, I'm no longer considering getting a 6250 phone. I'll just sit
on my 6150 until next year when I can get a GPRS phone.
