[this is a PURE rant, off-topic and contains bad words, so stop reading
now unless maybe you think the same way I do..]
I have been rather busy the past few days so I haven't been reading the
papers or watching TV. However I had the misfortune of reading Inquirer
Online which published excerpts from the statement of Onel de Guzman, the
alleged (or one of the) authors of the ILOVEYOU worm.
Some comments: his "thesis proposal" goes something like "why pay hundreds
of pesos for a few hours of internet service when you can use this program
to steal from others."
I have a biased opinion because I work for an ISP, but that has got to be
the most assholed idea I've EVER heard. I guess it's easy to justify
stealing if you are screwing some faceless company. But as described in
his proposal, you're not screwing some company, but other people who may
be even in worse of a financial situation than you.
Anyone who could write such a statement must be the most selfish,
unprofessional, dumb fuck I've ever seen. AFAIK AMA has a higher tuition
rate than UP. If that person could cough up that level of tuition, he
could arguably afford internet access. Wanting to screw other people
reveals a level of selfishness and stupidity that appalls me. If you want
to have internet access "until sawa" do something like work for an ISP. Or
stay in school till ungodly hours. I've done both.
What really galls me is the complete lack of concern exhibited by this
Onel de Guzman person. I guess it's hard to fathom having done $10B in
damage, and lots of other factors contributed to that figure - notably,
stupid users and stupid Micro$oft. But he ought to have shown even SOME
regret. This person is really screwed-on wrong. Totally amoral ("stealing
is ok," "aw, shucks, $10 billion you say.. tough luck").
And he's not even that clever.
Sigh. I reserve my admiration for the likes of Linus, John Carmack, and
Andrea Arcangeli (who's younger than me and probably most of the people on
this list). Amateur script-kiddies don't make that list.
