I figured it out. It was the permissions --- I spent the whole day studying
and playing around with file & directory permissions... and did not set the
final permissions correctly for home directories. I realized it when I did
a CTRL+ALT+1 to do a console login and the error messages came out.

This is just off the top of my head, okay? You might want to try logging
in via one of these "other users" then run "startx" from the command
prompt. Hopefully this will give you some information as to what's going
wrong. Maybe it's a misconfigured desktop environment or window manager?
Maybe some wrong permissions? I don't know, you'll have to check for
yourself and see. When you know what's wrong then hopefully the PLUGgers
