The easiest way to perform an upgrade (I've done it several times on
running systems without bringing them down) is:

1) go to the RedHat/RPMS directory of your distribution CD

2) rpm --freshen *.rpm

Repeat (2) above until there are no more errors. You will probably run
into several dependency problems (e.g. installation of a new package will
wreck another package dependent on the old version of that package). But
nothing you can't fix with judicious use of rpm --nodeps :) just make
sure to fix everything before calling it done.
