William,
Thanks for the great summary! While I know that there are 3rd party
things for Windows to do many of the things that Linux does, I was asking
about the out-of-the-box W98 gateway. As an aside: In my Before Linux
days those third-party products were ALL I knew - and many of them cost
real money. At this point, I am hard-pressed to think of any of those
products that I once thought were so great that I cannot either duplicate
or surpass with a Linux solution - but then my needs (and those of most
people and businesses) are fairly simple.
I hadn't thought about adding other services on the box - I was thinking
more along the lines of a firewall. But your point about other services
is well taken.
It used to be that if you put something like WinGate on your PC it became
practically useless for much else while serving. I suspect that with
currently popular new systems this is less of an issue. But that you could
run X on your Pentium while serving as a gateway is pretty impressive.
Thanks again for the information.
