or maybe the hello class was not instantiated?
there should a statement like
hello h = new hello();
somewhere in the main function...

try checking also if you installed the JDK correctly.
try running the sample program that comes with JDK if it runs, your
installation for the JDK is correct otherwise there is a misconfiguration
on the classpath.
