1. Partition your hard disk into

   /dev/hda1 as /       around 1GB
   /dev/hda2            - 64MB (Swap)
   /dev/hda3 as /home   around 9GB

2. Do the Installation again.

There is an upcoming Slackware 7.1 that has a new Lilo:

a1/lilo.tgz: Upgraded to lilo-21.4.2. For machines with a recent BIOS
             using large IDE hard drives, this version of LILO removes the
             restriction that the kernel must be within the first 1024
             cylinders.

I never had such problems with Lilo when using Maxtor Drives.
