[plug] What is Gimp?

You know guys, I'm still a newbie with Linux.  I would like to know what is Gimp.  Can 
you tell me more about it?  Where can I get it?  

Is the Adobe Photoshop 5.5 an Open Platform and will run in the Linux environment?
