The Star Office must be something new, or else my usual source didn't tell me
about it. They were having trouble installling OpenLinux and asked for some
help. Tried it on their PCs at their shop, and the install quit, giving the very
informative error message "The installation has failed because of an error" or
something equally eloquent. Thought it might have something to do with the
hardware -- we all know of Linux's trouble with some chipsets -- so I tried it
at home, on a PC with components I specifically requested to ensure that it
would work with something other than Windows. Same thing. I later learned that
Maxtor's local rep (Millennium Tech??) was offering "training" for their
authorized retailers. Truth to tell, I don't know how "training" would solve
what looked to me like a broken CD. Or maybe they got feedback and were quietly
recalling the CDs, dunno exactly what that was all about.

A postscript to this story: COL's install routine intrigued me enough to buy a
CD for PhP162. Installed without a glitch. Hard drive was kinda full though
since it was a spare 1GB, so I haven't used it much. More to the point, I mostly
use FreeBSD, which I've already customized to my needs. As to the general retail
public, I don't have any news of Maxtor's bundling. Maybe they still are, but
I'm fairly sure it's limited to tossing the CD with the package, not preloading.

Mabuhay.
