I haven't tried parted lately, but AFAIK to extend the tail-end of a
partition the free space must be stuck to it physically. If your two swap
partitions are physically behind the root partition, and you don't plan to
change the starting position of your root partition, then I don't see any
problem with using parted to do the job. The reason why I'm iffy about
changing the starting position of a partition is that the last version of
parted I tried would segfault when I attempted this, but no, it didn't
corrupt my data (and no, stupid me didn't have proper backups ready, was
working on a production machine, and was connected via SSH over a dial-up
link and wasn't even in front of my computer, and that was in the wee
hours of the morning and I didn't have my load of coffee yet, yes, I'm
crazy and stupid, hahaha!). :-)
Good luck, and unless your data is worthless, read the manuals at least
twice. ;>
