why get a program that *feels* something like CorelDRAW when you can *have* Corel? i
must admit i had trouble with an earlier version of coreldrw (i think v 6.0) suddenly
freezing up/giving a gpf msg etc every other command (and a particular series of
commands always makes the thing foul up). however, i attribute that to a stroke of bad
luck in picking an effing unreliable cd among the loads of possibly good ones. v 9.0
works fine so far, can handle at least 2 large files open at the same time, each ~10
MB. this is large for me, i used to stop at only one open ~2MB file at a time. anyone
ever make bigger cdr files? do you encounter any problems?
just so no one says anything re corel saves bloated files, the size was due to several
inserted bitmaps, fractal fills, blah blah. jpeg-less, the files were just 85 KB each.
this corel version is faster too, unlike the multitasking i used to do -- click, walk
off to eat etc. it also integrates better with msoffice programs than previous
versions of corel and office did with each other. granted, i have a much faster comp
than before, but i also try to do more complicated stuff now.
i also like the mac-type icons for the cdr files (thumbnail of the cdr image -- though
it's prolly the same thing in some linux progs, i really don't know. i prefer this to
the "preview" pane in win98). i'm intrigued by the vector fonts thing though. how
different is it from funky stuff you can do with fonts in corel? i'd like to have
something that, eg will let me skew the curves of letters within a sentence without
having to turn the entire thing into a non-text vector.
digression: msword 97 was also buggy for me. and a powerpnt 97 file i had to work with
a few times grew to 27 MB, because it inexplicably saved a few MB even if i did
nothing in between filesaves. could it have been a virus? sorry, didn't have the
opportunity to trace it, the thing was on my boss's notebook, he had to go out of town
with it, and it crashed soon after.
bit of trouble using adobe photodeluxe v 5 too, makes the file size of bitmaps 10-60
times larger than it is on ms photoeditor, for the same picture quality.
the 2000 msoffice versions are better. i started using it ~6 mos ago. i can imagine
several people on this mailing list going HA! WAIT AND SEE!
come to think of it, the only thing that's giving me problems on this computer now is
this edsamail program. it doesn't like multitasking and closes up the other windows i
have open, complete with a nice error msg i get iff i'm running edsamail. weird
though, edsamail is "powered by microsoft" or maybe i shouldn't wonder, hehehe. oh
well, you get what you pay for.
this is obviously coming from a person who loves corel (and has a love-hate
relationship with microsoft). but nothing's going to stop me from getting wonderful
and hopefully affordable software that supersedes what i have right now. imho though,
there has to be a great improvement to make the switch to other similar programs
practicable and worth the effort.
