[plug] linux and 3d accelerators

hi guys. i's just wondering, why would i want to have a 3d accelerator 
on my linux box? what applications/programs would benefit from it? i'm 
currently debating whether to put my Riva on my Linux development box, 
or on my Windows workstation(where i play games). thanks.
