FYI, I had similar difficulties trying Caldera on my homebrew server at
home, using a the CD included w/ the Infomagic 6-CD Linux kit.

You might have a defective CD. My uncle has an official Caldera CD and
seems to be doing OK.
IMO, if you're just starting out you should experiment with RedHat first to
get your feet wet.
