I can't get how using your own 10Mbps hub versus their 10/100Mbps hub can
impress anybody about Linux, but off the top of my head:

1. Was the CNet 10/100Mbps hub turned on?

2. I haven't used that particular model but I presume it has LEDs for each
of the ports, did the LEDs go on when the port was connected to a machine
and turned on?

3. Check your cabling. Make sure you're using the proper wiring scheme
(already mentioned recently in the list, check the archives). AFAIK
100Mbps is more sensitive, however 10/100Mbps should at the least drop
down to 10Mbps if your wiring is faulty.

An aside, though, I'm using an Intel InBusiness 10/100Mbps switch, and am
going through an intermediary RJ-45 socket (modular plug, they call it). I
noticed that with a Xircom RealPort 10/100Mbps PCMCIA NIC (whether forced
to 10Mbps, 100Mbps, or left at auto) a connection can not be established
at all. The only thing I could do was to connect the other end to a 10Mbps
hub instead of to the switch. I'll be getting an Arlotto 10/100Mbps switch
soon, I'll see how this will perform. I'll also do more tests with other
NICs over the modular-plug-infested line, to see if it's a particular
issue with the Intel InBusiness, or if it's something to do with 100Mbps
and the modular plugs I'm using.

If when changing the hub things worked, then what do you think? The hub
may not be faulty, per se. Test it with some other NICs, and find out.
It's obvious that there's some sort of incompatibility, though, either
between your hub and your NICs, or between or hub and your cables, or
between the three of them. :-)

I recommend you do more elimination, and keep the list posted. The more
tests you do and the more detailed reports you give, the more some of the
list members can help you out. Good luck.
