It is a good idea, if only because there are so many published remote
exploits for FTP servers. Also HTTP is a simpler protocol, involves less
overhead, and servers typically run as a standalone daemon rather than from
inetd. FTP used to have a slight edge, as it supported chunk downloads
(e.g. reget), but HTTP 1.1 supports that now as well.

Outside of that, they're about the same.
