This isn't exactly an answer to your question, but afterstep has a screen
capture utility. You can capture the active window, the full screen, and
possibly a selected region (haven't tried that last one yet). Having said that
1) I don't know if you'll find it worth the trouble to install afterstep just to
capture a screen and 2) I don't know if afterstep also uses the xwd engine to do
its screen caps, in which case you're back to where you didn't want to be.
