Hi, everyone!

I have friends who want to switch to GNU/Linux. They are currently
using a bootleg copy of Windows 98 and other apps but they realize
that they ought to not do that anymore so they talked with me about it
and gave me these details:

Hardware:
Pentium II 233 MHz
2 GB
RAM 64 Mb

EDO ram? SDRAM? I strongly suggest, double the amount of RAM :)

on board sound and video
external modem softk

Reminds me of my old PC :).
I installed Storm Linux on it back then. (nabili ko yung installer sa may Buendia..hehe)

What they want to do:
to record tapes to mp3

Hmm...how? Maybe shops which do convertion of VHS to VCD can do this?

web browsing
games
office suite

Definitely not OpenOffice. Abiword and gnumeric is your best bet.

chat client

Ok, XChat and Gaim will (might) work

scribus

No comment on this.

video and music playing capabilities

What soundcard? What graphics card?

I am not sure what distro they could install and what apps they could
use with these things in mind. I would appreciate suggestions and
comments. Thanks so much!

Since Slackware woks on hardware down to i486 architecture, it's the first to come in my mind. Use fluxbox, or even try XFCE.
