Unfortunately, by the time the problem shows up, it looks like the
initscripts have aleady shut down the logging daemons (syslogd and
klogd). You have to look into the console for relevant messages. As
suggested by Mr. Sarcilla, it might have to do with the kernel
configuration. What are the box specs?

Off the top of my head, the most likely culprit is ACPI/APM, but I
really can't say as I have no idea what your box is like. :)
