Interesting. Are you sure they turned away from it because of the UI or it's
just a hunch? Can you provide more data?

What's in a user interface?

There are very similar elements in Icewm, KDE and the Windows98 interface.
They all have this toolbar, the "start" button/kicker/thing on Icewm. They all
have the time and date. Once the "start"/"kicker"/thingy has been clicked, the
myriad of programs will show up, divided into categories that we are familiar
with.
"""

I don't think visual components matter as long as it fulfills the user's
goals. I don't know anything about your library setup, but if you provide
shortcuts to widely-used programs in your desktop, I think users can pick it
up quite easily (make sure you name the shortcut properly though).

"""
I guess that sometimes, it's the UI that turns people away from some FOSS
apps. I think I should observe them further. If the IT guys would not be able
to reformat that specific box in question, I have the chance to see how the
users react. I want to know why they react that way.
"""

Is there any chance that you post some data on the users' reactions? I am
interested on this and for sure some free software usability group out there
will be interested in your findings.

cheers,
