Not sure what you're saying in the 1st paragraph -- are you saying they're
incompatible? Free software and profit are *not* mutually exclusive. My
favorite story in that regard is Marty Roesch and his Snort/Sourcefire [0]
-- Snort is open source, Sourcefire is its for-fee counterpart.

As to paragraph 2 (after trimming the quotes), the GPL should answer any
questions.

The debate whether open source is a viable business model is a stupid
preoccupation, to say the least.

This "issue" of business model in free, open source software is a
question of ethics. When business-minded, or should I say
profit-oriented entities get their hands into free, open source
software, do they want to contribute back to the community? Or do they
want to keep what they find to themselves for profit or marketing
advantage?
