They might probably be right. I've made mine work, but I don't have an
IBM thinkpad (but it uses the AC'97 chip sets). I've encountered the
same problem as you have, and my solutions (based on others' solutions)
are:

1. I use wvdial as my dialer -- it detects my modem, and it knows that
it's a softmodem.
2. I run the slmodemd daemon upon startup.
3. I configured my dialer (wvdial in my case) to NOT wait for a CARRIER
when dialing into a server -- it might be different with kppp, and I
haven't made kppp work with my internal modem either.

If you didn't purchase technical support from their site, they won't
