for console viewing of graphics (requires svgalib access perms), i use
zgv, and for watching movies, mplayer -vo svga works nicely!

when not on console, i still launch apps from an open xterm or
gnome-terminal (hint: i like the heavy footprint environment on my
machine at home) and use command line mplayer a lot.
