There are plenty of non-modal editors out there, like pico/nano and
gedit. Don't learn Emacs if all you want is an editor that you can
type in without changing to insert mode! ;) Learn Emacs if you want an
insanely powerful and customizable programming environment that will
amaze and help you grow as a developer and as a user.

In fact, Emacs modes are far more arcane and powerful than vi modes.
Sure, you have to distinguish between insert and command mode in vi,
but in Emacs, you can have special modes for flashcards, e-mail, IRC,
planning, etc.

The keys available in each mode can be customized. For example, I've
set up my web browser (yes, Emacs has a graphical web browser) to fit
my tab-browsing Dvorak needs. I can cycle through tabs by pressing ,
and . (w and e on QWERTY keyboards) and search the net by typing s (;
on a QWERTY keyboard). It would take me far too much hacking to get
something like that working in Mozilla, even with something like
conkeror. Besides, not only can I remap my keys any way I want, but I
can also write little programs to make my life--or other people's
lives--much easier.

Emacs is also mode-oriented, but Emacs' modes can be easily customized
and navigation is fairly consistent. =) That's lots of fun! Emacs is
mindblowingly powerful. Don't be worried, though. You can get the hang
of it gradually, tweaking your system until it's practically an
extension of you. <grin>
