Emacs itself comes with several mail clients and a web browser written
entirely in Emacs Lisp, but most Emacs users download a whole bunch of
other files to extend their Emacs in strange and wonderful ways. For
example, the Planner personal information manager is packaged in
Debian as "planner-el", making it easy for people to apt-get install
it. You can download .el files or tar.gzs from the Net and follow the
instructions to install it and use it in your Emacs. But yes, you can
do all sorts of crazy things inside Emacs! I think the only things I
don't do with Emacs right now are browse Javascript-laden websites and
edit pictures. Everything else can be done within Emacs, at least from
the shell.

http://www.emacswiki.org is an excellent resource. You can find out
what things people are doing with their Emacs. Way cool. =)
