in all my years i didn't know Ctrl-L would clear the screen (i've
gotten very, very fast at typing "clear")

you're right, i tried it on urxvt and it doesn't work (just adds a
line). BUT if you change the TERM to "xterm" it will work. most apps
don't know what the h*ck an "rxvt-unicode" is anyway (even less) so
putting "export TERM=xterm" in your .profile isn't a bad thing.
