Hello everyone,

Can somebody help me solve my problem on our samba server?
I am installing Fedora Core 4 on a new HP Compaq machine with P4 3.0E
and 80GB Hard drive.

I was able to install RedHat 9 on it but when I tried installing FC4,
I received an error (kernel panic)

......

RAMDISK: Couldn't find RAM disk image starting at 0
VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(8,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3)

.......

Actually, the message is long but I was only able to get those line.

Thanks.

did u do an upgrade or clean install? i tried using fc4 as our
mailserver, one weird thing i experienced using it is i can't ping
anyone except its loopback interface, with exactly the same ip
settings with other distros i've used prior to installing fc4, i
finally ended up using debian instead, and it sure is working great

What's your lan card bro? I've experienced that kind of problem also in FC3 here in office. The vanilla kernel that is included on the FC package doesn't support a lot of devices. I fixed mine by downloading and compiling the 2.6.12 kernel with Tulip support.
